During my studies at Birmingham City University, my MA Multiplatform & Mobile Journalism Professor Paul Bradshaw – presented, to my class and I, an opportunity to go to Perugia, Italy for the International Journalism Festival from 3 – 7 April 2019.

It was an opportunity I knew I could not pass up, because I was going to have the opportunity to network with possible future employer’s, gain more knowledge about the field of journalism, and gain a deeper understanding about the industry I am trying to get into.

The International Journalism Festival in Perugia consisted of many conference discussions. One of my Professor’s – Diane Kemp – recommended for us to bring business cards, so that we can easily connect with the professionals who were going to be there; therefore, I had some made before going to Italy so I could do just that.

The Conferences

Crowd standing in line to see a International Journalism Festival discussion

As many of us Journalists’ attended the many discussions at the festival – sometimes even standing in the rain at times to see certain discussions – I got to see many discussions, which I was very excited to see – such as the Solutions to Journalism in Europe,  Impact Measurement: tools, frameworks and case studies, and #UnbiasTheNews: how diversity can save quality journalism

Honestly, it was overwhelming at times just how many conferences they had going on in one day for us to choose to choose from – for example, there was over 600 speakers  and 250 events to choose from. And not only that, we were also overwhelmed at the superb amount of knowledge we were gaining at each discussion – these are all positive things of course.

Even though it was difficult to decide which discussion I wanted to see, I still managed to figure out which discussions that I either absolutely could not miss or discussions that just simply intrigued me.

For example, I attended a discussion called Journalism on the Frontlines: The Case of Ukraine. This discussion in particular seemed like it was going to be interesting, which it was. I learned a lot about the differences in the ways in which people from Ukraine view Journalism and how they believe different approaches should be taken in the field of journalism, such as “rethinking the media space.”

Video featured below: Clip from the Journalism on many Front Lines: The Case of Ukraine discussion.

Every discussion I attended truly helped me understand journalism on a deeper level.  It opened my eyes to things I never would have even thought about and how I could possibly implement what I was learning into my journalism practices.

Another discussion I attended – Tech companies hiring Journalists to … be Journalists – was another interesting discussion between the panelists. One  of the panelists – Gabriella Schwarz – said one of her colleagues asked, “why are you leaving the news?” In which she responded, “I’m not leaving news. I’m just going to work at a tech company, which does the news”.

Video featured below: A clip from a discussion I attended – Tech companies hiring Journalists to .. be Journalists.

Another conference I really enjoyed was the Solutions Journalism in Europe discussion. This was a discussion – in particular – I was excited to see, because Solutions Journalism is something that I am highly interested in. They discussed what Solutions Journalism is and exactly how it can be conducted best in the broadcast industry.

And lastly, another discussion I really enjoyed – Reality Journalism: A new format taking the world by storm – I got to personally speak with TV anchor and Journalist Janet Mbugua-Ndichu. Moreover, she told me about her different approach she has taken in her career in journalism and how important it is to find and follow your passion in your career in journalism.

My Takeaway of the International Journalism Festival

Journo Jess optimistic about future

As I gain more knowledge at each Journalism conference trip I embark on, I am learning that there is truly so much more to the field of journalism than I could have imagined. There are so many more things that I must consider when writing stories, in which the world must and should know aboutBut not only that, I also learned so much while I partook my Journalism Masters Program. I learned so much about myself – personally and as a Journalist.

I was so very grateful to my MA Journalism professor who provided us with this amazing opportunity to partake in this journalism festival trip – I truly gained so much more knowledge about the field of journalism.

Even though we may be living in unprecedented times currently, I look forward to engaging in more conferences  – like the International Journalism Festival I participated in – in the near future, so that I can continue to grow even more so as a Journalist.

My commitment to my Career in Journalism shines not only throughout my educational studies and internships, but also in the many opportunities I have been given.

For example, while I was attending the University of Tennessee of Knoxville, my Professor – Dr. Sam Swan – presented an opportunity to go on a New York Broadcast Network Tour with my Journalism & Electronic Media colleagues on March 16 – 21, 2012.

It was an opportunity I knew I could not pass up, because I was going to have the opportunity to network with possible future employer’s and to learn more about the industry I want to get into.

Good Morning America

My Journalism classmates and I with Presenter Lara Spencer

Our first stop was Good Morning America, in which we had the opportunity to take a tour of the studio. After our tour, we watched the live broadcast from outside the GMA studio with the rest of the crowd.

Once the live broadcast was over, many of the Presenter’s of GMA came out to greet us – Robin Roberts, Josh Elliott, Lara Spencer, and Sam Champion

Robin Roberts, a UT Alumni, actually spoke with our class. When we told her we were students from the University of Tennessee, and since she is a UT Alumni herself, she ended up singing with us – our school’s Fight Song – ‘Good ole Rocky Top‘.

Robin Roberts is probably one of my favourite Presenter’s, because we share much of a similar medical backstory – she has overcame her battle against breast cancer, and as for myself, I have overcame my battles against shunt malfunctions while undergoing 28 brain surgeries – I am a brain tumour survivor

Our Broadcast Network Tour

Me and my two colleagues - Alision Driscoll & Snezana Stefanovska Shultz

Not only did we have the opportunity to tour the GMA studio, but we  also toured many other studios as well – NBC, Fox News, CNN, Time-WarnerCBS, WPIX-TV, ESPN, Food Network, MTV, and Bloomberg.

When we were at the NBC studio, we got to see where the Saturday Night Live show took place, and then at Fox News, they showed us around the studio and how they conducted their daily newscasts.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take the CNN tour, because I started having bad headaches, because of my medical condition; therefore, I had to go back to my hotel room to lay down until my headache eased up.

I was highly disappointed that I had to miss this tour, because it has always been a dream of mine – since I was young – to work at CNN.

Once I got back up on my feet, the next tour was the Food Network, which was a sight to see. The studio was quite impressive – the kitchen base was huge and how they conducted their shows was quite interesting.

We also toured the Bloomberg building and I’ve got to say, the architecture of that building blew me away. It was an immaculate and gorgeous building – not only on the outside, but also on the inside.

We seriously got to meet so many amazing people throughout our tours. I learned so much about the industry and what career path I really wanted to take – to become a Presenter/News Broadcaster.

Live shows

Live with Kelly

My Journalism colleagues and I also had the opportunity to attend many live shows; therefore, I got tickets to attend a Live with Kelly show, an Anderson Live show, and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Kelly Ripa – on the Live with Kelly show – was most certainly a fun show to see. Kelly entertained us with some jokes, plus she spoke with one of my favourite actresses – Elizabeth Banks – on her show.

But I do have to say, Anderson Live was by far my favourite show to see, because Anderson Cooper is an all-time role model of mine. I have been watching him since I was young, plus I highly admire his broadcasting skills

Craig Ferguson was also a very entertaining guy to watch. My classmates and I actually went for some drinks at an NY Irish Pub before the show, so that we could get on his “Scottish level”.

My Journalism & Electronic Media colleagues and I of course got to squeeze in some non-business related stuff – such as see Top of the Rock, Statue of Liberty, Little Italy, Empire State Building, Central Park, and Times Square.

And last – but not least – to top off our trip to New York, a few of my classmates and I went to see a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden

As I am originally from New Jersey, I have unfortunately never had to opportunity to see a Knicks game before and it was something I had always wanted to do.

Now I might not necessarily be the biggest basketball fan, but as I said, it was something that I had always wanted to do – to watch a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden – and now I can say that I have and mark that off my bucket list!

An assault on America’s Democracy: A perspective from an American Freelance Journalist

“Democracy will always win in America – and that’s something outgoing President Tump can never take away.”
– Freelance Journalist, Jessica Noel Quinlan

January 6, 2020 – a day that was suppose to be filled with hope and celebration, quickly became a day filled with an hatred and anger as a mob stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to interrupt the certification of President-elect Joseph R. Biden as the winner of the US 2020 Election and to somehow overturn the election results

Being an American, I was not only heartbroken to see just how divided the United States of America has truly become, but I was also appalled to see how much of an influence outgoing President Donald J. Trump had on his supporters by encouraging extremism groups – for example, ‘The Proud Boys‘ and the ‘QAnon members – right-wing extremism domestic terrorist groups, who are people who have listened to Trumps conspiracy theories such as the voter fraud claims.

At a rally – right before the certification at the US Capitol – Mr. Trump told his supporters, “Let’s march to the Capitol to take back our country, because you can never show weakness, you have to show strength.”

These commands not only gave his supporters the fuel they needed to “fight like hell” as instructed by Outgoing President Trump, but it also lead them to the insurrection of the US Capitol.

So this nonetheless, is proof that Outgoing President Trump did incite the insurrection of the US Capitol by encouraging his supporters to interrupt Congresses duty to the American people, which is in accordance to the Electoral Count Act of 1887.

Video featured below: Trump’s speech at rally right before the insurrection of the US Capitol on January 6, 2020.

I was horrified as a I watched what was happening on my television from afar – here in the UK –  of these so-called “American people” who laid siege to the US Capitol.

They called themselves “Patriots”, but in reality – they were Domestic Terrorist’s

I honestly just felt sick to my stomach. I wanted to  throw up. I could not believe what I was seeing.

Video featured below: CNN footage captured of the mob storming the US Capitol.

As I watched the domestic terrorists breach the US capitol shouting, ‘Hang Mike Pence’, ‘Stop the Steal’, ‘USA’, and ‘We want Trump’ – it broke my heart to see how many Americans believed these lies of voter fraud and how they could turn their back on their country in the way they were.

Video featured below: Viewer discretion is advised as the video contains sensitive information.

These so-called “Americans” thought they were doing  the  “American thing” by attempting to overturn the US 2020 election results, because they truly believed there was election fraud – even though several states had done a recount, which did not change the outcome of the election.

The domestic terrorist broke windows, vandalised offices, took pictures of sensitive government documents, stole laptops, took pictures of one another posing at desks, and threatened the lives of members of Congress – it was beyond the Un-American thing to do and it was clearly domestic terrorism.

Video featured below: CNN footage of mob breaking windows of US Capitol.

There was one moment in particular in which a police officer – Eugene Goodman – lead the mob away from the Senate Chamber in order to protect Members of Congress who had not gotten to safety quite yet.

This man will forever and always be appreciated for his bravery and did receive a Congressional Gold Medal for his bravery, because  he saved many lives by doing so that day. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest award a civilian can receive.

“He’s a hero!

The United States Capitol was under attack by armed, violent extremists, and Officer Eugene Goodman was the only thing standing between the mob and the United States Senate.

I shudder to think what might have happened had it not been for Officer Goodman’s fast thinking and commitment to his duty and his country.

While some will remember last Wednesday for the very worst in our country, the patriotism and heroics of Officer Eugene Goodman renew my faith and remind us all what truly makes the United States great.”

-U.S. Representatives Charlie Crist

Video featured below: Police officer Eugene Goodman who lead mob away from the Senate Chamber.

“In moments of crisis, there are always individuals who rise to the occasion and put themselves in harm’s way in defence of others.

On January 6, 2021, one of those individuals was Officer Eugene Goodman.

If not for the quick, decisive, and heroic actions from Officer Goodman, the tragedy of last week’s insurrection could have multiplied in magnitude to levels never before seen in American history.

With this prestigious award, we can show our gratitude to Officer Goodman for saving countless lives and defending our democracy.”

-Congressman, Emanuel Cleaver

Normally in situations like this the President would have immediately called the National Guard to handle the mob; however, Outgoing President – Donald J. Trump – did no such thing.

Instead, he was on Twitter. He was excited to see the chaos he had created.

It’s truly appalling to me how oblivious Outgoing President Trump was that by him encouraging his supporters to “march to the US Capitol in an attempt to overturn the US 2020 Election” wasn’t going to lead to an insurrection of the US Capitol and inflict violence and harm to many American’s.

This siege went on for about 6 hours.

It wasn’t until President-elect Joesph R. Biden went on National television to plead to Outgoing President Donald J. Trump to put an end to this insurrection.

Video featured below: President-elect Joesph R. Biden’s address to Outgoing President Donald J. Trump to tell his supporters to go home and put an end to the siege of the US Capitol.

Fortunately, after President-elect Biden’s address to Outgoing President Trump, Trump did decide to do the right thing and did go on National Television to do just that.

On the other hand, Outgoing President Trump’s response was a response that wasn’t at all that unexpected in that he continued to reiterate the voter fraud lies he had been telling his supporters since the confirmation of President-elect Joesph R. Biden’s win. On the other hand, fortunately,  he did tell his supporters, “it’s time to go home now.”

“I know your pain. I know your hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us.

It was a landslide election and everyone  knows it.

Especially the other side.

But you have to go home now. We have to have peace. We have to have law and order and respect our great people of law and order.

We don’t want anyone hurt.”

-Outgoing President of the United States of America Donald Trump

Video featured below: Outgoing President Donald Trump address to his supporters who stormed the US Capitol.

I believe that by Outgoing President Trump reiterating the lies he had been telling his supporters just reignited the fire that was burning within them. It just gave them all the more ammunition they needed to continue to stay and “fight like hell” as their loyalty to Outgoing President Trump.

Even though Mr. Trump said in his address, “we don’t want anyone hurt” blood was shed – 5 people died, one was a police officer, the others were protestors.

As the chaos continued, and with considerations to the fact that National Guard had not shown up yet, Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a 6 p.m. curfew in order to clear people off the streets of Washington D.C., especially at or around the US Capitol.

As the curfew set in – the Police officers and the National Guard took to the streets to  begin clearing the streets of Washington D.C., especially at or around the US Capitol.

I watched the news late into the night as the Washington Police and the US National Guard continued in their efforts to bring an end to the insurrection.

Video featured below: The chaos of the mob as it continued into the night.

Despite the mobs best efforts to stop the certification of Joseph R. Biden as the winner of the US 2020 Election, Congress did resume to count the electoral votes and they did certify that Joseph R. Biden was the winner of the US 2020 election.

“They tried to disrupt our democracy – they failed.

They failed to obstruct Congress.

This failed insurrection only scores how crucial the task before us is for our republic.

Our nation was founded precisely so that the free choice and people is what shapes our self-government and determines our destiny of our nation.

Not fear. Not for us. But the peaceful expression of the popular will.”

– Senator of the United States of America, Mitch McConnell Jr.

After the certification of Joseph R. Biden’s win of the US 2020 Election, outgoing Vice President Mike Pence delivered a message of the certification and the insurrection on the US Capitol:

“Violence never wins. Freedom wins, and this is still the people’s house.”

In the end of this violent insurrection on the US Capitol, the American people who voted in a free and fair election did have their voices heard and Joseph R. Biden was declared as the winner of the US 2020 election.

 January 6, 2020 – America’s democracy won that day.

Covid-19 Chicago Survivor speaks out: “Two months later, and I still feel unwell”

“It’s not something that anyone wants. I hope that everyone does everything they can to avoid getting sick or potentially getting someone else sick.

You just don’t know how it is going to impact you or how it is going to impact someone else that you might get sick.”

Chicago, Illinois – a city best known for their music festivals, gardens upon gardens to explore, vast amount of bike pathways to cycle, and an endless amount of sporting events to observe – has now dimmed their lights, because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Adapting to a less outdoorsy lifestyle in Chicago is what the residents of Chicago have been encouraged to do in order to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic – “Stay Home. Save Lives”.

Chicago is home to over 2 million residents – and of these 2 million residents – more than half have tested positive for the Coronavirus, with more than 8,000 daily cases, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH)

As the Coronavirus cases continues to rise in Illinois, an Executive Order 2020-74 – also known as the Tier 3 Mitigations – has been imposed by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot  in all 11 regions of Illinois. The Executive Order became effective on November 20, 2020, it was re-issued on December 11, 2020, and was again re-issued through January 9, 2021.

On the bright side though, despite cases being so high in Chicago, Illinois Department of Health reports, Chicago has a 98% recovery rate of the Coronavirus; on the other hand, there are still many who continue to experience the “after affects” of the virus. Cari Reed Chicago Resident and Healthcare Administrator  – shares her experience of being diagnosed with the Coronavirus and how she continues to struggle with side effects two months later

Covid-19 Survivor shares her experience

Cari Reed with husband and son

Cari Reed – wife, mother, and Healthcare Administrator – began to experience Covid-19 symptoms on Friday, October 30th. She said, “I felt very rundown and I had a sore throat‘, so I decided to go to bed early thinking, ‘it must just be the week catching up to me'” – but then, by Saturday morning, she said she woke up feeling very unwell – ‘extremely fatigued, bad headaches, bone pain in my joints, very nauseous, and a sore throat’. On the other hand, she said, “I never experienced a few of the other “known” Covid symptoms – ‘a loss of taste or smell or came down with a fever”.

As Cari began to experience the other Covid related symptoms, she knew that she needed to isolate herself from her family – especially her husband, Rik. Cari said, “Rik is about a year-in-a-half out from having an organ transplant and he is currently on immune suppressants as advised by his doctors – which makes him immune compromised and more susceptible to the virus”.

As for Cari, she also has her own preexisting medical condition, Chronic Spontaneous Idiopathic Urticaria, which refers to the mass cells in her body, that is broken and she said she randomly has attacks that looks very similar to a severe allergic reaction – such as hives that covers her body, which results in swelling, and blocks her airways. Therefore, Cari said, her medical condition also makes her  immune comprised and more susceptible to the virus as well.

When Cari started to experience the Covid symptoms, she immediately isolated herself in her bedroom and called her physician to see what she needed to do. Her doctor recommended, “wait three days from the start of the symptoms to see if the symptoms subside”. However, after the three days she still felt unwell, so she decided to drive herself to a testing centre – which was an outdoor facility. The Coronavirus outdoor testing facility used two nasal swabs – one for a rapid test and the other was a PCR test.

After Cari got tested, she said her doctor called her about two hours later and said, “your rapid test came back positive,” and then recommended for her to monitor her symptoms.

“By that point, I started having tightness in my chest, but I wasn’t having difficulty breathing.

It just felt like I had a really bad chest cold.”

– Covid-19 Survivor, Cari Reed

Cari spent 10 days in bed. She said, ‘the fatigue had come at that point and I have never felt so unwell’. Even though Cari felt so fatigued, she said, “it was very difficult getting rest and actually falling sleep”. Additionally, during her first 10 days of isolation, her husband Rik brought her plates of food throughout the day, so that she could stay in her room. “Fortunately,” Cari said, “we have a Master Suite bathroom attached to our room, so I didn’t have to share a bathroom with my family members during this time.”

Cari Reed's husband Rik brings her tea andtheir puppy as she isolates

When her husband Rik brought her a tray of food, Cari said, “I would crawl over to the door, sit on the floor while eating off the tray, and then get back into bed”. Furthermore, she said most days she was even too weak to stand in the shower.

“There was a point, probably around day 8 or 9, where I was feeling so terrible. The tightness in my chest was so bad that I was debating on whether or not I needed to go to the hospital.

It’s a terribly scary thing to not be able to catch your breathe when you’re laying down and you’re not even moving or exercising. So yes – when you are just being still and you get that feeling, it’s pretty scary.”

– Covid-19 Survivor, Cari Reed

After about 11-12 days Cari said, “the sore throat, headaches, and body aches went away”; however, she still felt extremely fatigued, had a terrible cough, and an upset stomach. On the other hand, she said she was able to get up out of bed, brush her teeth, comb her hair, and was able to sit in a chair to watch some Netflix – that went on til about day 19 she said.

“You’ve probably heard of people who have had Coronavirus have brain fog, and that is very much the case. It’s very difficult to concentrate on things.

Just even watching something on TV, I would space out – just something as passive as that.

I just had no ability to consontrate on things, I was feeling that badly.”

– Covid-19 Survivor, Cari Reed

Around day 19, she spoke with her doctor about whether or not it was safe for her to go out of her room and be around her family, because she was starting to feel better. He did believe that it was safe; however, she said, she waited about two more days before attempting to go out of her bedroom, just to be on the safe side.

“The very first thing I did was hug my husband and then walked outside to stand in the sunshine – and it felt amazing. The fresh air was amazing. The sun on my face just felt very healing.”

Video featured below: Cari shares her journey with me and what she has experienced with the Coronavirus – from the onset go Covid symptoms, to having to self-isolate, and then eventually being diagnosed with the Coronavirus. Duration 9:21.

Cari admitted into hospital

Cari Reed admitted into hospital for Covid-19

After 19 days of recovering from the Coronavirus, Cari attempted to “go back to work” – working remotely. However, her co-workers questioned if she was well enough, because they could tell she was dragging and not quite herself.

Cari said, “I was not great”, but she tried to just push through the grogginess that she was feeling. On the contrary, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Cari said she woke up having the severe Covid symptoms again.

“I just felt really wiped out, I had shortness of breathe, and I got really winded – just doing simple things like getting off the couch to go across the kitchen to get a drink of water. I just felt so out of breathe.”

– Covid-19 Survivor, Cari Reed

When Cari began to feel these all too familiar Covid symptoms again, she knew that she needed to go see a doctor, because she was worried that she could potentially risk getting her family members sick again – even though she had isolated herself well into the recommended time frame by her doctor – she still wanted to make sure there was no possibility of potentially infecting her family members again.

So Cari went to see her doctor. He checked her lungs, which he said were clear. On the other hand, Cari said her doctors biggest concern was the possibility of her having blood clots. Cari had been laying down for a long period of time while she was in isolation, which puts her at risk for blood clots. Her doctor said, “it is a known factor with this  virus”. Contrarily, Cari said she was not experiencing the other symptoms that is typically associated with blood clots – such as swelling or running a fever.

As Cari’s doctor was concerned about the possibility of blood clots, he told her it was best for her to go to the emergency room to get it checked out.

“I have worked in Hospital Administration for over 15 years and I’ve never seen anything like this.

Emergency Rooms are normally pretty loud and hectic – but not this time – it was eerily silent. There was a lot of activity going on, but it was a very quiet and somber atmosphere.

Everyone was completely guarded in PPE.

All the patients were in private bays.”

– Covid-19 Survivor, Cari Reed

After she got examined by a doctor at the Emergency Room, they ruled out the possibility of her having a cardiac event or having blood clots; however, they did notice that she was very dehydrated, so Cari received some fluids through her IV’s, which made her feel much better.

Cari said, the hardest part about going to the hospital was that fact that she had to go alone. She said she felt very scared and thought, “if this is a clot, am I going to have to have surgery, what’s going to happen, and how long am I going to be here by myself?”

Video featured below: Cari’s shares more about her experience of being alone in hospital to find out whether or not she had a cardiac event or blood clots. Duration 5:55.

Fortunately though, in order to help Cari deal with these nerve wracking feelings she was experiencing and not having her loved ones by her side – Cari did say that she was at least able to at least receive text messages and Facebook messages from her family members and Medical Colleagues, which was very comforting to her. But not only that, she also received a lot of support from the Frontline workers who were caring for her.

“I wasn’t alone in the sense that I had so many wonderful and highly skilled very compassionate Care Givers around me.

They were just wonderful and compassionate. They knew I was scared, so they tried to give me reassurance along the way. As test results came back, they would come in, squeeze my foot, and tell me everything looked good on my cardiac tests and that my heart was okay. They would squeeze my toe again and run back out.”

– Covid-19 Survivor, Cari Reed

By the end of the day that evening, Cari was able to go home after receiving her positive news about her test results and receiving the necessary fluids that she needed, because she was so dehydrated.

Video featured below: Cari shares more about her experience in hospital – what she saw, what the doctors did for her, and how much support she got from the Frontline workers. Duration 15:13.

Cari continues to struggle & offers a message to those who are experiencing the same

It has been two months since Cari was diagnosed with the Coronavirus, and she is still experiencing ongoing side effects from the virus. Cari said, “my  stomach is still not well and my stamina is still not there”.

Even though Cari’s stamina is still not at 100%, she has tried to push through in order to get back to where she used to be. Cari said, she is normally a very active person and typically stays in shape; however, after attempting to do a two block challenge, Cari said she was really dragging towards the end.

After she pushed though this, she knew that she needed to be a little more slower and be more patient with herself. Her doctors said they are confident that she will get there, but also said it is just going to take time.

As Cari has endured through such a traumatic experience, she offers a personal message to those who may be dealing with the same after effects of the Coronavirus:

“If you have a mild to moderate case, ‘time is like the tincture,’ like my physician told me. It can be scary. It can be lonely. But don’t break that isolation. You don’t want to get your loved ones sick.

You can get through it. It’s really hard, but you can get through it.

There’s no telling what’s on the other side. Some of us bounce back quick, some of us don’t. Just stay in touch with your physicians. Listen to the guidance of the experts. Where your mask. Stay away from gatherings of people. I don’t want anyone I care about to go through what I went through, it’s just not worth it.”

Former Colleague, friend, and Psychology Research Assistant Sonya Kaminski’s Story: American couple change wedding plans amid Coronavirus pandemic

Sonya Kaminski’s Testimonial:

“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Jessica both personally and professionally for years and continue to be impressed with her skills and accomplishments. When she approached me about capturing my story, I was both honoured and excited for a chance to share such an important event that happened in my life.

It goes without saying that one’s wedding is one of the most important events in a person’s life and takes a monumental amount of planning and preparation.

For my husband and I, it was also a quite stressful event, as the COVID-19 pandemic began just months before our wedding date. I was happy to share all that this meant for us with Jessica, so that we could hopefully inform and inspire others who were in the same boat.

Jessica took so much time and care when interviewing us and putting together our story – and I am happy to have this special (albeit chaotic) time in my life captured into words and video. Now, I’ll be able to share my story with others in a way that would not have been possible.

Jessica is not only passionate about the field of journalism, but her genuine care for those she works with is evident. She is so kind and has a magnetic energy making everyone she meets love her immediately.

I look forward to working with her again in the future!'”

Follow-up on Nurse Tayler: The struggles she faces as pandemic continues to get worse at the Navajo Nation Reservation

“I was at the point … GO-GO-GO.

Just numb.

You’re kind of set to thinking in disaster mode – ‘I have to do this’, running on adrenaline all the time – but then, after 6 months, the adrenaline starts to wear off, and you just get kind of tired of seeing death and suffering.

It’s especially hard to deal with when you know, ‘there are so many things that can be done to prevent all that you are seeing and it’s just not happening.'”

-Tayler Oakes, Covid Care Force Nurse

Update on Covid-19 Pandemic at the Navajo Nation Reservation

Above image: Provided by Nurse Taylor (taken in Arizona at the Navajo Nation Reservation)

According to the Indian Health Service, “the Navajo Nation Reservation is the largest Indian Reservation in the United States, comprising of about 16 million acres, or about 25,000 square miles” – stretched across three states – Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.”

Since the Coronavirus pandemic began, the Navajo Nation has been hit the hardest in America. The Navajo Nation Council released a statement, ‘the Navajo Reservation has reported over 18,000 Coronavirus cases’, with over ‘600 deaths since March‘. Furthermore, with considerations to the fact that the daily cases are high – 159 – and ICU beds have reached their  capacity, the Navajo Department of Health has put the Navajo Nation Reservation under a Stay at Home Order (December 2, 2020) for three weeks, which includes a 57-hour weekend lockdown order.

With this in mind, I decided to do a follow-up story with Nurse Tayler Oakes, whom I spoke with four months ago – in August 2020. Furthermore, Nurse Tayler told me about what she was experiencing as she conducted Contact Tracing for the Coronavirus. As for this follow-up story, I wanted to find out if things have changed – good or bad – for the Navajo people or Diné as they prefer to be called. Diné means, ‘The People’ or ‘Children of the Holy People’.

Nurse Tayler fills a gap at the Navajo Nation Reservation

Nurse Tayler is a Traveling Nurse. According to nurse.org, a Traveling Nurse is a ‘registered nurse who works in short-term roles at hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities around the world and fills gaps in areas where there are nursing shortages. Moreover, Nurse Tayler was sent to the Navajo Nation Reservation by Covid Care Force (a Non-Governmental Organization NGO) to engage in Contact Tracing for the Coronavirus; however, these past few months she has also taken on several hospital shifts, because there was a great need for nursing staff within the Navajo Nation Hospitals

Nurse Tayler has been working at the Navajo Nation Reservation from the very beginning of the pandemic, in which she has yet to see any positive change occur for the Dine

“There still isn’t any work at the Reservation.

The Navajo people have to work outside of the Reservation – so when the surrounding communities are not taking the pandemic seriously – it affects them.

They then go home to their multigenerational households, 9 – 10 family members living under one roof, including 92 – year – old Great Grandma.”

– Tayler Oakes, Covid Care Force Nurse

Multi-generational households are very common within the Navajo Nation Reservation – it’s a part of their culture – to preserve their history and heritage. And because there are so many people who live under one roof, it makes it nearly impossible to social distance in order to keep all family members safe. Because of this, it has caused the Covid cases to surge at the Reservation. Nurse Tayler said, things have not gotten any better since the last time we talked – four months ago.

“Unfortunately, things have gotten much worse.

The case load has increased significantly, so we are way busier than we were back in August.

Our case load – for the past five days – has beaten our record of new cases consistently – everyday – for the last five days.

I think last week, the Navajo Nation had 900 new cases.”

– Tayler Oakes, Covid Care Force Nurse

Nurse Tayler said, in spite of the Daily New Cases, the death toll has not gone down at all. Additionally, she said, there is not any new treatments readily available in order to prevent further deaths.

“All of the medical knowledge they have come up with, all of these new discoveries of great drugs – it doesn’t really mean a lot if the drugs are not accessible.

And it really doesn’t mean anything if there is no rooms available in the hospitals in order to treat the patients – which, we are running into a lack of resources here, so it only goes so far.”

-Tayler Oakes, Covid Care Force Nurse

As hospital beds fill up, and rooms become unavailable for patients who are needing treatment, Nurse Tayler said, ‘hospital beds are becoming a scarce resource nowadays’.

“Honestly, a nurse takes care of more patients than they are suppose to. ICU goes beyond their limits. Hospitals go beyond their limits. And that’s what’s happening.

Hospitals across the country have put out statements that they are soon going to have to start turning patients away – which is really scary.

I mean this is America – in 2020 – and to think about the concept of hospitals turning patients away is insane, but I do think we are heading towards that point.”

– Tayler Oakes, Covid Care Force Nurse

One of the biggest resources that the Navajo Nation is struggling with is a lack of resources for the communities. Nurse Tayler said, ‘I personally tried to get food for a patient today and then was told, ‘we are out, we don’t have any, sorry’ – so that’s an issue’. She also said, it has been nearly impossible to keep up with Contact Tracing.

“At our height over the summer, we had about 20ish cases coming in a day – but now, on Friday, we had about 67 cases that day. So we are constantly adding 40–50 cases a day and it’s nearly impossible to Contact Trace for that many people.”

-Tayler Oakes, Covid Care Force Nurse

Nurse Tayler said, her team – Public Health Nursing – has expanded greatly, because it is now at a point of ‘all hands on deck’. Many Health Care Workers – from Nutrition, Pharmacy, and Physical Therapy are assisting in Contact Tracing. However, Nurse Tayler said, this doesn’t seem to be enough to keep up with Contact Tracing.

“We’re kind of like the violin players on the Titanic – it’s going down, but we just keep playing.”

-Tayler Oakes, Covid Care Force Nurse

Nurse Tayler shares more: 'Aid Presence in America', 'how she and her co-workers are dealing with their mental health amid pandemic', and 'how her family feels about her working in the Covid crisis'

Featuring: Nurse Tayler

According to the World Health Organization, the United States has surpassed 15 million Coronavirus cases, with over 243,000 new cases (updated December 13, 2020). As the pandemic continues to spiral out of control in the US, Nurse Tayler said, ‘there have been many Aid Organisations who have arrived on American soil in order to assist hospitals who are in need of help’.

“When I got here in July, Doctors Without Borders – which is the most prestigious medical NGO in the world – they were here on the ground, which they’ve never deployed within the United States before this.

I came here with Covid Care Force, so they still have a very big presence on the ground. Project Hope is another NGO that I have deployed to hurricanes before this, they also have a presence on the ground.

So yes, there is definitely a big Aid presence on the ground, which I think is just mind boggling – to think – ‘I am in America, seeing the problems that I am seeing, and working side-by-side with with these Aid organisations.

The last time I worked side-by-side with Doctors Without Borders was at a Refugee Camp in Greece, and now I’m doing it here – in rural Arizona. It’s just insane to me that this is really happening in America.”

-Tayler Oakes, Covid Care Force Nurse

As you may imagine, Nurse Tayler – who is constantly working with Covid patients who are suffering and dying from the Coronavirus – she has been struggling with her mental health; however, she has been able to get assistance through Emotional PPE – which offers FREE Mental Health Services to Health Care workers who are serving on the Frontlines during the Pandemic.

As Nurse Tayler continues to work on the Frontlines of the Coronavirus pandemic, her family –  back in Tennessee – worry about her.

“It’s been a really hard year on my mom, because I spent most of this year in Covid, and then my mom actually had it.

So, I had to deal with that – but then, we lost two family members to Covid. So yeah, it’s impacted me on a personal level.

And then to come to work to help other people mourn over the phone as their parents are dying or their loved ones dying – Covid is just a really awful thing.”

Nurse Tayler is hopeful about the future: 'New President' and 'Covid Vaccine'

As a New Administrationthe Biden Administration – is set to take office on January 20, 2021, I asked Nurse Tayler if she believes things might get better with a New Administration coming in. Nurse Tayler said, ‘she does believe things will get better once the Biden Administration takes over’.

“The previous Administration didn’t really have a response, and their handling of it was – TO NOT. And I think the fact that the New Administration has a Covid Task Force, which is composed of Scientists, Immunologist, Infectious Disease Doctors, and nothing else – I think that alone is reassuring.

So, I am very hopeful about this Administration; however, inauguration isn’t for another month and things are only getting SIGNIFICANTLY worse by the day.

And it’s not just that things are getting worse, it’s the rate at which things are getting worse, which – I think – is really scary.”

-Tayler Oakes, Covid Care Force Nurse

At a news conference on December 8, 2020, President-elect Joe Biden said, during his first 100 days in office he will ‘urge Americans to wear face masks‘ and will implement ‘a mask mandate by signing an executive orderwhich requires Americans to wear a mask in federal buildings and during interstate travel on planes, trains, and buses‘.

Along with the mask mandate, President-elect Joe Biden vows ‘to distribute 100m vaccines within his first 100 days in office‘ in his efforts to lead the country through the pandemic successfully. Nurse Tayler said she believes ‘not only having a new President in office could be a game changer for the Coronavirus pandemic’, but so can the vaccines, which are currently being rolled out.

The CDC (US Center for Disease Control Prevention) approved the Pfizer vaccine for American usage on December 13, 2020 and will begin distributing as early as Monday – December 14, 2020.

“This is the next step in our efforts to protect Americans, reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and help restore some normalcy to our lives and our country.”

Nurse Tayler said, she is ‘excited about the vaccine developments’ and ‘is planning on getting the vaccine as soon as it is available to her.

“I research it throughly – obsessively – even on my own free time.

I one-thousand percent believe that it is safe. I will be getting it as soon as its available.

I have recommended it to everyone that I love, that I want them to get it as soon as its available, and I would recommend it to anyone else as well.”

American couple change wedding plans amid Coronavirus pandemic

“Everyone was super supportive.

I think most people were glad that we made this decision, because even though they had to change plans, it really was the safest option.

So yeah, everybody was so supportive and awesome about our decision.”

– Sonya Kaminski

The Coronavirus pandemic has made a great impact in 2020

The Coronavirus pandemic has greatly impacted important events for many all over the world. People have had to cancel and or reschedule important events – such as conferences, concerts, or even weddings. According to a HITCHED survey, “nine in ten couples – 90% – have chosen to postpone their wedding to next year – 2021, because they were concerned with how long the COVID-19 crisis was going to last”.

Covid-19 weddings

As for American couple – Patrick and Sonya – they were planning their wedding for June 21, 2020, in which they too had to make the difficult decision to postpone their ‘Fairy Tale Wedding‘ to June 2021 due to the health risks that the pandemic had imposed on their wedding.

The American couple were of course disappointed that they had to make the decision to postpone their ‘Fairy Tale Wedding’. Patrick said, ‘that was the most difficult challenge, having to make the decision to postpone the wedding’. Additionally, Sonya said, ‘they knew it was an important decision to make, because they wanted to keep their wedding guests informed and allow them to make the necessary arrangements if needed’.

“Just making that decision was really hard and stressful, because we wanted to make it early enough where we could give people a heads up – so if they needed to cancel flights or change hotels they could do that.

We didn’t want people scrambling last minute, but it was also like, ‘if we made the decision too early – maybe things would start getting better, maybe the number of cases in our area or Arkansas would start decreasing, and maybe we could have actually had the wedding if we waited a little longer’.

So I think, choosing a deadline for a decision to postpone the wedding was really hard.”

-Sonya Kaminiski

Patrick and Sonya – were – as I said, disappointed that they had to make the decision to postpone the wedding – besides, this has been something they have been anticipating for a while now – to become husband and wife.

Patrick and Sonya have been together for a while now – for 12 years. They said, ‘their love for one another has truly persevered through some of the most challenging circumstances; however, they have always stuck by each other’s side’.

“We met at a White Water Rafting Company in 2008, where we both worked.

I was working in the retail store and Patrick was a Raft Guide.

We met that summer, and have been together ever since.”

– Sonya Kaminski

Video interview featured belowPatrick and Sonya share more of their story with me – how they met, how long they have been together, and when Patrick decided it was time to “pop the question”. Interview conducted on June 13, 2020. Duration 2:21.

As long as Patrick and Sonya have been together, they have always known that they wanted to make a lifelong commitment to one another – to get married; therefore, after moving from their home state – Tennessee – to Florida to begin their next chapter, Patrick decided it was time to “pop the question”.

“I guess I’ve known for a while now that I wanted to propose.

We had been talking about it and we decided that we didn’t want to wait until after Sonya finishes her PhD, so we figured we would go ahead and get married.”

– Patrick Kaminiski

When Patrick did “pop the question”, Sonya inevitably said ‘yes’, so they then began to plan their ‘Fairy Tale Wedding’ – with their family and friends – at a ‘Royal inspired’ Chapel – St. Catherines at Bell Gable, which is nestled at the foot of Ozark Mountains in Arkansas.

Covid-19 pandemic change plans for American couple's 'Fairy Tale Wedding'

However, after having planned their ‘Fairy Tale Wedding‘, setting a date for June 21, 2020, and inviting +30 people from all over the US – and the UK – to their Arkansas wedding, the American couple made a difficult decision amid the Coronavirus pandemic – to postpone their ‘Fairy Tale Wedding’ to the following year of June 2021.

The American couple made this decision based on the fact that the Coronavirus cases were only getting substantially worse everyday; therefore, moving their wedding to the following year was the best option for them, so that they could better their chances for their wedding guests to be present for their wedding day.

After they made this decision, Patrick and Sonya had to let their wedding guests know of their decision – to postpone their wedding to June 2021.

Even though this was a difficult decision for them to make, Patrick and Sonya said, ‘their wedding guests were actually happy about their decision to postpone the wedding’.

“Everyone was super supportive.

I think most people were glad that we made this decision, because even though they had to change plans, it really was the safest option.

So yeah, everybody was so supportive and awesome about our decision.”

– Sonya Kaminski

On the other hand, even though Patrick and Sonya decided to reschedule their ‘Fairy Tale Wedding’ at the St. Catherine’s at Bell Gable Chapel for June 2021, they also made another decision – they wanted to go ahead and “tie the knot“.

Furthermore, Patrick and Sonya did end up “tying the knot” on their ‘original planned wedding day’ of June 21, 2020 at Alligator Point Beach in Florida with just a few of their family members, a friend (the Maid of Honour)their Pastor (who married them), and of course their dog, Mr. Fraggles (the Best Man)

Featured photo: American couple with family and friends
Featured photo: Best Man: Mr. Fraggles (their dog)

Sonya said, Fraggles has been there from the very beginning of their relationship – for 12 years. She also said, Fraggle’s is and was just as much part of their big day as her and Patrick. Moreover, even though this was not their traditional planned wedding ceremony that they had hoped for, they still wanted to include the “normal wedding traditions”.

“We still wanted the smaller ceremony to include a lot of the things that I have always envisioned on my wedding day.

So we’re still going to have a cake, it’s just smaller. We’re still going to have flowers, there’s just not going to be near as many of them. We’re still going to have a photographer, just not for the whole day.”

– Sonya Kaminski

The American couple said, the hardest part about making the decision – to plan for two weddings  – was the expense of it.

“We were definitely adding onto the wedding budget, because we already had the bigger wedding budgeted.

So we talked about it and decided it was once in a lifetime thing.

So even though the Florida wedding was going to be smaller, I still wanted it to be documented. So we hired a photographer.”

– Sonya Kaminski

The beach that Patrick and Sonya chose to ‘tie the knot’ was at Alligator PointSonya said, ‘This beach is generally not a busy beach’, so they were not concerned about crowds being near them or their guests during the ceremony – in which, they were able to keep their five wedding guests, as well as themselves, safe during these unprecedented times.

Slideshow video featured below: Sonya & Patrick’s wedding ceremony at Alligator Point Beach on June 20, 2020. Duration 1:35.

The American couple were glad they made the decision to ‘tie the knot’ before their original planned ceremony with their family and friends; however, they did run into a few issues as they attempted to reschedule their Arkansas wedding. For the most part though, the American couple said, ‘their wedding vendors were very understanding and tried their best to accommodate their request to reschedule their ‘Fairy Tale Wedding’ at the St. Catherine’s at Bell Gable Chapel.

“We ran into a couple of obstacles, but I think people were trying their best to be accommodating and to do the best they could for us.

So we really appreciated that.

I think we ended up with some good vendors.”

– Sonya Kaminiski

Despite the difficulties that Patrick and Sonya faced of their wedding during the Coronavirus pandemic, the American couple offer a message of hope to those who are also planning a wedding:

“When you plan a wedding, you plan down to the second of what is going to happen on that day – ‘here is where the people will stand, what everyone will wear, and what will the cake look like.

You can think all you want that your plans will go perfectly.

But I think, if you stay positive – as you can – even though this is a really stressful and sad time, you’ll be able to get through it.

Your wedding might not look like you planned – I know ours won’t for both of our ceremony’s – but we are still going to make the best out of it and it’ll be a great day either way.”

– Sonya Kaminski

Opinion: The unprecedented challenges awaits President-elect Joe Biden

The democratic Joe Biden is the new USA president after the American elections of 2020, Nov 7., Washington D.C.

It was 6 o’clock here in the UK on November 7th –  four days after US Election Day – the world finally received the news of who was going to be America’s next President – Former VP Jospeh Robinette Biden, (Electoral votes received: Biden 306, Trump 232).

I felt this overwhelming of emotions in that moment – I cried tears of happiness, joy, and…relief. But I was not the only one who felt this way. People all across America crowded the streets – dancing and shouting cheers of joy – ‘Joe Biden was the newly elected President of the United States of America’.

Video featured below: CNN reported people gathering all over the US – Atlanta ,Georgia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, and New York City – in light of Joe Biden’s victory. Duration 3:51.

The US 2020 Election was almost like an affirmation, because of the voting turnout. According to National Public Radio (NPR), ‘more votes were cast in the 2020 Presidential Election than in any other U.S. election in history, and the turnout rate was the highest in more than a century. President-elect Joe Biden earned 80 million votes, while President Trump earned the second-highest of votes – 74 million.’

Now that America has a Commander in Chief who plans to implement positive change on the serious issues that America is currently facing, but he will also make every effort to create unity amongst the American people during these unprecedented times.

Video featured below: I recorded Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris and President-elect Joe Biden’s victory speech’s – using my iPhone – here in the UK at 1:30 a.m. (8:30 p.m. EST) on November 8, 2020. (By the way, if you think you hear me sniffling at times, it’s because I am. I got a bit emotional listening to these uplifting speeches). Duration 35:15.

A Divided Nation

Currently, America is divided on so many issues, which has caused so much disruption, pain, and affliction; more specifically issues on ‘The Coronavirus Pandemic‘, ‘The Economic Crisis‘, ‘Systemic Racism’ and ‘Climate Change These issues are what is hurting America’s economy, public health, and public safety, which President-elect Joe Biden plans to and has already put into motion – changes that can make a difference in these underlying issues.

Recently, 60 Minutes did an interview with President Barack Obama . President Obama said, “over the course of four years – during President Trump’s Presidency – the United States of America has become the Divided States of America.”

Video featured below: Clip from “60 minutes” with former President Barack Obama who talks about how divided the nation is – ‘not just the Politicians, the Voters are divided as well’. Duration of Clip 6:48 – 14:05.

With these very serious issues that America is facing, I do believe that President-elect Joe Biden is the best suited person to lead the American people during these unprecedented times, because not only does he have nearly four decades of experience of serving the American people in US politics and is knowledgeable of what is expected from a President and how to conduct himself in such a position, but – he, himself, personally – has endured so much adversity throughout his life; therefore, he has compassion towards those who are hurting right now.

At a very young age President-elect Joe Biden had to learn how to deal with adversity. During his childhood years, he had to learn how to cope with a lifelong Disability of Stuttering. On top of that, he suffered a great deal of loss in his life –  in 1972, his first wife and baby daughter died in a car crash and then in 2015, one of his sons died of brain cancer. Through all of these adversities, he has seen opportunities – opportunities to persevere and to overcome – and to try to make the best out of every situation.

Now, that Joe Biden has won the 2020 election, the fate of America lies in his hands. President-elect Biden plans to make it his number one priority – to bring America back together again on the controversial issues that are currently dividing the nation as a whole. This will – of course – not be an easy task for President-elect Joe Biden, with consideration to the fact that he will now have to convince those 74 million people who voted against him, and prove himself to ALL of the American people in that he can and will see the country through these unprecedented times.

The First Challenge: The Coronavirus Pandemic

“We are in the Battle for the soul of this Nation.”  – President-elect Joe Biden (April 25, 2020)

According to the World Health Organization, the United States has reported over 12 million Coronavirus cases with over 255,000 deaths (updated November 25, 2020).

President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris have a Seven-point plan in order to beat Covid-19 and get the country back on track. This plan is as follows:

  1. Fix Trump’s testing-and-tracing fiasco to ensure all Americans have access to regular, reliable, and free testing.
  2. Fix personal protective equipment (PPE) problems for good.
  3. Provide clear, consistent, evidence-based national guidance for how communities should navigate the pandemic — and the resources for schools, small businesses, and families to make it through.
  4. Plan for the effective, equitable distribution of treatments and vaccines, because discovering isn’t enough if they get distributed like Trump’s testing and PPE fiascos.
  5. Protect Older Americans and Others at High Risk.
  6. Rebuild and expand the defenses that Trump has dismantled to predict, prevent, and mitigate pandemic threats, including those coming from China.
  7. Implement mask mandates nationwide by working with governors and mayors and by asking the American people to do what they do best: step up in a time of crisis.

Follow this link to view the full details of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ seven-point plan to beat COVID-19 and  the country back on track.

What makes matters even more complicating during these unprecedented times, is the fact that there was a delay of Transfer of Powers, and in that  delay of over two weeks America recorded its highest number of daily cases on November 14, 2020 – over 51,000 daily cases .

Fortunately though for the American people, President Trump recently gave the orders to begin the Transfer of Powers process on November 23, 2020. Additionally, before President Trump gave the order to begin the Transfer of Power, the Biden administration had already put together a ‘New Coronavirus Task Force‘, so they are now ready to get to work.

President-elect Joe Biden also plans to rejoin the World Health Organization (WHO). According to WHO, their organization works worldwide ‘to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable.’ Their goal is ‘to ensure that a billion more people have universal health coverage, to protect a billion more people from health emergencies, and provide a further billion people with better health and well-being’.

By addressing and handling the pandemic in a more constructive and effective way as well as rejoin the World Health Organization – these are just a few of the many actions that the Biden Administration plans to take in order to handle the US pandemic that is at large, so that the American people can get back to “normal”.

The second challenge: The Economic Crisis

Economic Crisis

As the America people have suffered greatly from the Coronavirus pandemic – physically and emotionally – they have also suffered financially as well. When the pandemic began, unemployment rates saw an all-time high in April 2020 at 14.7%, according to Trading Economics.

As there was such a deep need for assistance from the government, President Trump signed a bill , which was passed in April 2020 by the House of Representatives called the CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act). This bill – worth $3 trillion – was designed to ‘help people, families, businesses, and the economy cope with the disastrous effects of the COVID-19 pandemic’. The package also included a one-time payment of $1,200 to those who qualify.

Even though the unemployment rate did drop to 6.9% in October 2020, there are still many Americans who are struggling and are needing further assistance from the government. With this in mind, Congress did undergo discussions for a Second Stimulus Package – the HEROS (Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus and Emergency Solutions) ACT. However, the Democrats and the Republicans could not reach an agreement.

Therefore, President Tump put an end to the Second Stimulus Package negotiations and made an Executive Order, which included a $400 bonus added to unemployment benefits, residential evictions are to be banned, deferrals of payroll taxes, and student loans to be deferred another three months.

Meanwhile, as time is running out for Congress to approve or to not approve a Second Stimulus Package before the end of the year, Americans are struggling daily – financially – amid the Coronavirus Pandemic impact.

President-elect Joe Biden is preparing now for how he would get another Covid Relief Package passed and he has also developed an Economic Recovery planwhich would help the Economy get back on track. This plan includes:

  • Provide state, local, and tribal governments with the aid they need so educators, firefighters, and other essential workers aren’t being laid off.
  • Extend COVID crisis unemployment insurance to help those who are out of work.
  • Provide a comeback package for Main Street businesses and entrepreneurs.
  • Immediately put people to work by enlisting them to help fight the pandemic, including through a Public Health Jobs Corps.

“The truth is the economy wasn’t working for folks long before the crisis hit. It’s why Kamala Harris and I won’t just build back to the way things were — we’ll build back better. We won’t be satisfied until the economy starts working for everyone.”

– Joe Biden, September 27, 2020

The third challenge: Systemic Racism

George Floyd

Systemic Racism continues to be a very serious issue in the United States. Historically, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement began after the killing of Treyvon Martin on February 26, 2012. This movement advocates for those who have been wrongfully killed by police officers and are fighting for change in the justice system. BLM began in 2012 and still continues to this day. They are fighting for change. Fighting for protection. And fighting for equality in the United States of America.

During Trump’s Presidency, the Black Lives Matter movement spiked up again. Breonna Taylor. George Floyd. These are just a few people who were killed by police officers – wrongfully. Therefore, protests erupted all over the United States – and even the world.

Systemic Racism is – unfortunately – an ongoing issue, which continues to desperately need attention by Government Officials. President-elect Joe Biden says that he plans to deal with this issue in a number of ways:

  • Spur public-private investment through a new small business opportunity plan.
  • Reform opportunity zones to fulfill their promise.
  • Make a historic commitment to equalizing federal procurement.
  • Ensure the Biden-Harris housing plan makes bold investments in homeownership and access to affordable housing for Black, Brown and Native Families.
  • Achieve equity in management, training, and higher education opportunities connected to the jobs of the future.
  • Boost retirement security and financial wealth for Black, Brown, and Native Families.
  • Ensure workers of color are compensated fairly and treated with dignity.
  • Ensure equity in Biden’s bold infrastructure and clean energy investments.
  • Support second chances for economic success.
  • Strengthen the Federal Reserve’s focus on racial economic gaps.
  • Promote diversity and accountability in leadership across key positions in all federal agencies.
  • Build a 21st century care infrastructure.
  • Address longstanding inequities in agriculture.

Biden’s proposal seeks to address the country’s racial wealth, opportunity and jobs gaps through what the Campaign says would be a “historic effort to empower small business creation and expansion in economically disadvantaged areas — and particularly for Black, Latino [Asian American and Pacific Islander], and Native American-owned businesses.”

“Economic and racial inequities have shaped us for generations. But I give you my word: [As] President, I will marshal the ingenuity and good will of this nation to turn division into unity and bring us together.”

The fourth challenge: Climate Change

Climate Change

The world is currently dealing with a clear and unprecedented global emergency – Climate Change – which could jeopardise animal and human life. If the world does not work together in this global emergency by avoiding temperatures to  rise to 1.5°C in the next 10 year by reducing carbon emissions that are driving this, we will then be at the “tipping point of no return.”

With this in mind, President Trump – irresponsibly – withdraw from the Paris agreement in 2017. The Paris agreement works to ‘to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the agreement aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change.’

However, after Joe Biden is sworn in as President on January 20, 2020, he plans to rejoin the United Nations Paris Agreement in order to tackle the issue of ‘Climate Change’. He also has a Climate Policy, which includes, “$1.7 trillion investment in clean energy and green jobs, and calls for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and a ban on new oil and gas permits on public lands”.

With a new leader in charge – President-elect Joe Biden – there seems to be hope in saving the Planet, because he believes in science and he believes it to be ‘irresponsible and reckless to ignore the data that science is providing on the issue of Climate Change’. If the issue of Climate Change goes ignored, while the world is getting closer to its tipping, it could become a problem of ‘no return’.

Video featured below: President-elect Joe Biden explains the existential threat of Climate Change – not just to our environment, but to our health, our communities, our national security, and our economic well-being. Duration 4:51.

According to the Biden plan for Clean Energy Revolution and Environmental Justice – on day one of Joe Biden’s Presidency – he plans to make a number of Executive Actions to drive progress on the issue of the Climate Emergency. These Executive Orders will include:

  1. Methane pollution limits for new and existing oil and gas operations.
  2. Use the Federal government procurement system – which spends $500 billion every year – to drive towards 100% clean energy and zero-emissions vehicles.
  3. Ensure that all U.S. government installations, buildings, and facilities are more efficient and climate-ready, harnessing the purchasing power and supply chains to drive innovation.
  4. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation – the fastest growing source of U.S. climate pollution – by preserving and implementing the existing Clean Air Act, and developing rigorous new fuel economy standards aimed at ensuring 100% of new sales for light- and medium-duty vehicles will be electrified and annual improvements for heavy duty vehicles.
  5. Double down on the liquid fuels of the future, which make agriculture a key part of the solution to climate change. Advanced biofuels are now closer than ever as we begin to build the first plants for biofuels, creating jobs and new solutions to reduce emissions in planes, ocean-going vessels, and more.
  6. Save consumers money and reduce emissions through new, aggressive appliance- and building-efficiency standards.
  7. Commit to every federal infrastructure investment should reduce climate pollution, and require any federal permitting decision to consider the effects of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
  8. Require public companies to disclose climate risks and the greenhouse gas emissions in their operations and supply chains.
  9. Protect biodiversity, slowing extinction rates and helping leverage natural climate solutions by conserving 30% of America’s lands and waters by 2030.
  10. Protect America’s natural treasures by permanently protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other areas impacted by President Trump’s attack on federal lands and waters, establishing national parks and monuments that reflect America’s natural heritage, banning new oil and gas permitting on public lands and waters, modifying royalties to account for climate costs, and establishing targeted programs to enhance reforestation and develop renewables on federal lands and waters with the goal of doubling offshore wind by 2030.

After President-elect Biden executes these executive orders for Clean Energy and Environmental Protection, he also plans to make investments in clean energy jobs for the American people, which involves:

  • Infrastructure: Create millions of good, union jobs rebuilding America’s crumbling infrastructure.
  • Auto Industry: Create 1 million new jobs in the American auto industry, domestic auto supply chains, and auto infrastructure.
  • Transit: Provide every American city with 100,000 or more residents with high-quality, zero-emissions public transportation options.
  • Power Sector: Move ambitiously to generate clean, American-made electricity to achieve a carbon pollution-free power sector by 2035 – creating millions of jobs with a choice to join a union.
  • Buildings: Upgrade 4 million buildings and weatherize 2 million homes over 4 years, creating at least 1 million good-paying jobs with a choice to join a union.
  • Housing: Spur the construction of 1.5 million sustainable homes and housing units.
  • Innovation: Drive dramatic cost reductions in critical clean energy technologies, including battery storage, negative emissions technologies, the next generation of building materials, renewable hydrogen, and advanced nuclear – and rapidly commercialize them, ensuring that those new technologies are made in America.
  • Agriculture and Conservation: Create jobs in climate-smart agriculture, resilience, and conservation, including 250,000 jobs plugging abandoned oil and natural gas wells and reclaiming abandoned coal, hard-rock, and uranium mines
  • Environmental Justice: Ensure that environmental justice is a key consideration in where, how, and with whom we build — creating good, union, middle-class jobs in communities left behind, righting wrongs in communities that bear the brunt of pollution, and lifting up the best ideas from across our great nation — rural, urban, and tribal.

For more information on the Biden-Harris plan to create more union jobs in order to tackle the climate crisis, please follow this link.

As Climate Change is and should be of high priority in order to save the planet, President-elect Joe Biden does hold a strong vision in order to implement change.

“I know that Climate Change is the challenge that’s going to define our American future — and I know meeting this challenge will be a once-in-a-century opportunity to jolt new life into our economy, strengthen our global leadership, and protect our planet for future generations.”

–  Joe Biden, July 14, 2020

The other challenges President-elect Joe Biden faces: Justice Amy Coney Barrett

Not only will the Biden Administration be dealing with the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Economic Crisis, Systemic Racism, and Climate Change, they may also face other important factors, which could impact the American people – the newly appointed Supreme Court Justice  Amy Coney Barrett

Just weeks before the election, President Tump nominated and succeeded in the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett as the newly appointed Supreme Court Justice – following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Justice Ginsberg was an iconic figure who voted on and supported ‘the most divisive social issues’ – abortion rightssame-sex marriage, voting rights, immigration, health care and affirmative action.’

President Tump’s nomination of Judge Barrett as a new replacement for Justice Ginsberg – just a week after her passing – essentially disregarded Justice Ginsberg’s dying wish, according to NPR.

“My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”

– Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg

Judge Barrett underwent a weeklong of hearings. She was questioned on ‘how she would rule in court proceedings’ and ‘whether or not she would allow her ‘personal religious beliefs’ interfere in her court rulings’. Her response was consistent when asked about a number of issues in that she would not give an answer as to how she would rule in future court cases; furthermore, she did say that she is “committed to the role of law and the role of the Supreme Court in dispensing equal justice for all.”

Furthermore, when questioned by Senator Feinstein on how she would rule in cases – such as ‘overturning the Roe vs. Wade‘. Again- she would not give a direct answer as to how she would rule in future cases.

Video featured below: During the Supreme Court hearings, Judge Amy Coney Barrett refused to answer Senator Feinstein on whether or not she believes if Roe v. Wade should be overturned. Duration 6:44.

Senator Kamala Harris was a part of the court proceedings and questioned Judge Barrett on important issues such as striking down the Affordable Care Act, Woman’s rights, and racial rights.

Senator Harris acknowledged Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg views on ‘a woman’s right to control her own body and to make decisions about her own body and healthcare and reproductive choices.’

Video featured below: Senator Kamala Harris questioned Judge Barrett on issues that could make her rulings in court unethical such as a woman’s right to abortion. Duration of clip 8:01.

Source: PBS News Hour YouTube Channel-Sen. Kamala Harris questions Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. (posted October 13, 2020)

After Senator Harris questioned her on these topics, she asked to have three documents submitted in her opposition for Judge Barrett’s nomination: a letter opposing Judge Barrett’s nomination from the NAACP, a statement opposing Judge Barrett’s  nomination from the Planned Parenthood Federation of AmericaPlanned Parenthood Action Fund, and a report opposing Judge Barretts nomination from the NAACP legal defense education fund.

However, despite Senator Harris’ efforts in her opposition to move forward with Judge Amy Coney Barrett nomination for the position of the Supreme Court Justice, the US Senate did vote in Judge Barrett’s favour – with a vote of 52-48, which means that there is now a 6-3 conservative majority on the court. This could make things problematic for the Biden Administration in order to protect the rights for ALL US Citizens.

President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris made it very clear that they were not happy about Justice Barrett taking on the new role after a woman who dedicated her life in protecting woman’s rights, the LGBTQ rights, and racial rights; therefore, they may decide that they want to ‘pack the court‘ by adding more justices to the court. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachussetts said in March 2019, ‘It’s not just about expansion, it’s about depoliticizing the Supreme Court.”

President-elect Joe Biden recently gave a statement on 60 Minutes:

“I will establish a bipartisan commission to consider court reforms — a broad category that could include court packing, but also a variety of other measures. I will ask them to, over 180 days, come back to me with recommendations as to how to reform the court system.”

Moving forward, I do believe President-elect Joe Biden will do what he believes is best to protect ALL American citizens rights.

The Delay in Transfer of Powers

President Barack Obama recently meet with 60 Minutes to discuss his new book ‘The Promised Land’, his thoughts on the US 2020 Election, and what he believes President Trump should do with regards to the best interest of the American people. Mr. President said, ‘there has been a long standing tradition of Transfer of Powers since the Election of 1801 between John Adams and  Thomas Jefferson‘ and has thus continued ever since. The process of a Peaceful Transfer of Powers is as follows, according to President Obama:

“There are a set of traditions that we have followed in the Peaceful Transfer of Power.

The outgoing President congratulates the incoming President. Instructs the government and the agencies to cooperate with the new incoming government coming in. You invite the President-elect to the Oval Office, and then – on Inauguration Day – the President invites the President-elect to the White House. There’s a small reception and then you drive to the inauguration site and the outgoing President sits there as part of the audience.

The in-coming President is then sworn in and at this point, the outgoing President is a citizen just like everybody else and owes the new President to do their best on behalf of the American People.”

-President Barack Obama

Video Clip featured below: 60 Minutes interviews with President Barack Obama and discusses the “normal traditions” of a Peaceful Transfer of Powers.  Duration: 0:48.

Source: 60 Minutes on YouTube – Barack Obama: The 2020 60 Minutes interview. November 15, 2020)

Despite President Barack Obama sticking to the normal traditions of a Peaceful Transfer of Powers, he did have have conflicting feelings as he was leaving the White House in Donald Trumps hands as he describes in his book, “The Promised Land.”

‘Shortly at the end of my presidency – after Michele and I boarded Air Force One for the last time and traveled west for a long deferred break, the mood on the plane was bittersweet.

Both of us were drained, physically and emotionally, not only by the labours of the previous eight years, but by the unexpected results of the an election, in which someone diametrically opposed to everything we stood for – had been chosen as my successor’.

-President Barack Obama, ‘The Promised Land”

Now that President Tump is in the same position as President Obama was in, President Trump has refused to follow the “normal traditions” of a ‘Peaceful Transfer of Power’. Instead, because President Trump has lost the US 2020 Election, he has firmly grasped onto thinking that the election had been stolen from him”.

President Trump tried to challenge the courts by claiming ‘Voter Fraud‘ in six of the Swing States: Arizona, Michigan, Nevada Pennsylvania Wisconsin, and   Georgia. He had hoped to overturn the election results with these claims; however, after all six states underwent audits, they concluded that the election had been a ‘free and fair election – in which case – all cases in the six states were thrown out, according to AP News.

After these cases were settled, President Trump decided to do right by the American people, because he was only hurting the American people in the long run if the Transfer of Power was delayed any longer. For example, an executive order signed by President Tump on August 9,2020 which will expire at the end of December. The executive orders which is at jeopardy includes:

  • About 12 million workers will loose unemployment benefits in December when the CARES Act provisions lapse and or absent of an extension.
  • Americans will also be without any relief, leaving them financially vulnerable at a time when Covid-19 infections are rising and pushing officials to reimpose shutdowns.
  • Federal eviction and student loan protections are also scheduled to end after December.

Fortunately though, for the American people, the Transfer of Powers has begun; therefore, President-elect Joe Biden has access to the resources he needs in order to extend these benefits for the American people if need be.

Let the 'Transfer of Powers' begin!

Commendable

It has been nearly four weeks after the US election results were announced and Joe Biden was declared the winner of the US 2020 Election. On the contrary though, just last week – November 23, 2020 – President Trump has conceded – ‘in his own way’ – and has decided to move forward in the Transfer of Powers

It comes in light of a recent tweet from President Trump:

Even though President Trump does say in his tweet ‘I believe we will prevail’, he is nevertheless – in his ‘own way’ – conceding and doing right by the American people, so that the Biden Administration can do what needs to be done to protect the American people during these unprecedented times.

The Trump Administration then sent a letter to the Biden Administration, in which CNN obtained this letter from Emily Murphy – Administrator of U.S. General Services Administration (dated November 23, 2020). The letter acknowledges that the Biden Administration will have access to  the resources that they need in order to begin the transition process.

The Biden Administration responds after receiving the letter:

“The GSA Administrator has ascertained President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the apparent winners of the election, providing the incoming administration with the resources and support necessary to carry out a smooth and peaceful transfer of power.

In the days ahead, transition officials will begin meeting with federal officials to discuss the pandemic response, have a full accounting of our national security interests, and gain complete understanding of the Trump administration’s efforts to hollow out government agencies.

– Yohannes Abraham, Biden transition head

Now that President-elect Joe Biden and his Administration have been given the “green light” to begin the transition of Transfer of Powers, they are now full and ready to get to work to ‘build back better’ and to provide ‘Duty of Care’ to the American people.

US Woman’s Collegiate Soccer Team undergo quarantine measures after Coronavirus outbreak on team: Soccer Player and Coach speak out

“Quarantine is kind of a grace period – to help make yourself better and to improve yourself – not only physically, but mentally as well. It can be lonely and scary for some and even though there is a lot of stress going on, you can still focus on the things you struggle with and work on the things you think you should improve on.”

– Freshman Soccer Player of Roanoke College, Hannah Shay

Collegiate Woman's Soccer Team in Virginia experiences Coronavirus outbreak

According to the Virginia Department of Healththe State of Virginia has confirmed over 153,000 Coronavirus cases, which has resulted in over 3,000 deaths. Moreover, the State of Virginia reports 625 daily cases (cases that are reported in the last 24 hours – updated 6 October 2020).

With the continuous increase in Coronavirus cases in the State of Virginia, it has made measures extremely challenging for sports teams to resume practices and to participate in games, because of the social distancing measures that have been implemented amid the Covid-19 pandemic in order to keep sports teams and their players safe.

With this in mind, I spoke with Roanoke College’s Freshman and Soccer Player Hannah Shay who shared with me how her university has implemented Covid-19 safety measures at her university in order to keep everyone safe.

“On campus everyone is suppose to wear a mask and we are suppose to social distance all the time. For example, in the dinning room its social distanced. Everywhere you gather in groups, you are suppose to social distance.”

Shay said, because of this pandemic, it has made her first season as a new incoming Freshman at Roanoke College as a soccer player of the Maroons Team extremely challenging, because she and her teammates have already had to undergo quarantine measures due to the fact that a few of the girls on her soccer team had tested positive for the Coronavirus; therefore, all of the girls on her soccer team had to undergo quarantine measures.

“We all went into quarantine on a Thursday night, because I was told that one of my teammates were in contact with someone who had tested positive for Covid and they said they were going to self-quarantine just to be on the safe side.

So then, we all went into quarantine Thursday night and then Friday morning I ended up calling Health Services and asked them how they wanted us to quarantine.

They told me that, because I wasn’t really in contact with anyone that they know of that tested positive , they didn’t see a need for me to self-quarantine.

But then, I got an email in the middle of one of my classes that I had to go get a Covid test done and then I had to quarantine for 14 days.

– Freshman Soccer Player of Roanoke College, Hannah Shay

Shay said, undergoing quarantine was hard for her, because she had to rely on other people to bring her meals to her and then her meals were left at her door, so that she would have no contact. With this in mind, Shay said that she does have an intolerance to gluten and how important it is for her to eat gluten-free meals. Shay did have an issue at one point with getting gluten-free meals, because she did receive a meal that was not gluten-free; however, once she contacted someone about this matter it was cleared up quickly.

Shay’s roommate was currently not on campus at the time; therefore, she told her roommate to just stay home until she was out of quarantine – for the 14 days of her quarantine. Shay said, she was able to keep her mental health at bay during her time of quarantine with consideration to the fact that this was the first time of living on her own, while having little to no interaction with others, besides FaceTime and Zoom calls.

“I was definitely going stir crazy. Like I really wanted to go exercise.

It was under my impression that we couldn’t leave our dorm. So I didn’t get outside air besides my window being open.

Our coach said, “yeah you guys could have gone outside for a walk or a run” and I was like, ‘well dang, I would have done that every single day then, but I ended up watching Netflix and getting ahead on my homework as much as possible’.”

As soccer player Hannah Shay and her teammates get back on the soccer field, they resumed to their “new normal” of soccer practices, which meant that they continued to implement Covid safety measures in order to best protect everyone on the team. Shay said, ‘it feels good to be back on the field after having to undergo quarantine measures.’

“It’s nice to be able to get out and stretch my legs, get in the goal, and finally get some shots on me instead of just having to run in all of the time.”

– Freshman Soccer Player of Roanoke College, Hannah Shay

With consideration to the social distancing measures, which are being enforced in most countries amid the Coronavirus, Shay said that her Coach and the rest of the coaching staff have implemented Covid safety measures in order to keep her and her teammates safe.

“So the entire school – all athletics – are actually in a phase opening.

For soccer, right now we are in phase one meaning we can use the ball, we can do drills, but whenever we get to practice we have cones that are about 6, 7-8 feet a part to the left and right of us and in front of us.

So our coach tells us – ‘find a cone and leave on our mask until we are about to go out to do our warm up stretches’. Whenever we do our warm up stretches we take off our mask and stretch to the entire width of the field and then we warm up – so we are spaced out the entire time.”

– Freshman Soccer Player of Roanoke College, Hannah Shay

Shay also said, when they do practice, she and her teammates stay within the cones that the coaching staff have set out. If she or her teammates get too close, her coach has a hand signal that he uses to let them know they are too close during practice; whereby, the players quickly reposition themselves in order to social distance more. With consideration to Shay’s position on her soccer team as a Goal Keeper, she said the coaching staff have a rotation plan in place in order to keep her and the other two Goal Keepers at a safe distance.

“I’m a Goal Keeper, so we’ve been doing shooting.

We have two goals down at one end. The Goal Keepers are pretty spaced out, so we rotate between the two goals between the three of us. So two people are in and one person is out and that one person is easily 6 feet a part from the other Goal Keeper, if not more.

And then after practice – we cool down and stretch, masks go on as we change while we take off our cleats, put on our sneakers, and stuff like that.”

– Freshman Soccer Player of Roanoke College, Hannah Shay

Shay said, with considerations to the pandemic, the athletic staff had to switch athletic seasons around; furthermore, this meant instead of Shay’s Soccer Team – the Maroons – playing in the Fall, they plan to play in the Spring instead. She also said, looking ahead to her soccer season when they do play soccer games, certain measures should be put in place in order to keep her and her teammates safe.

“I’m not sure how safe it’s going to be unless everyone quarantines 7-14 days before a game, because I know the NFL, they are really focusing on keeping their players in quarantine and limiting the visitors that they see.”

– Freshman Soccer Player of Roanoke College, Hannah Shay

Shay said, she does has some expectations for her coaching staff and her teammates as her soccer practices and games progress moving forward and as the Coronavirus pandemic continues:

“I hope that everyone follows the rules – to social distance, wears their face mask, follows the CDC guidelines, and is cautious around other people.

We can’t help it if someone gets Covid at this point, because it is spreading so fast. All you can do is take care of yourself and take care of other’s around you.”

– Freshman Soccer Player of Virginia Roanoke College, Hannah Shay

Head Coach Philip Benne explains what other safety measures have been implemented to keep 'The Maroons' safe amid the Coronavirus pandemic

Coach Philip Benne coaching the Maroon's Soccer Team

Head Coach of Woman’s Roanoke College Soccer Team Philip Benne – has been coaching for Roanoke Woman’s Soccer Team for 31 years and says this year has obviously been different compared to the other years he has coached; however, he said that he and his coaching staff have been able to implement a plan in order to best keep his soccer players safe at this time.

“We are in pods of 10 where there is no intermingling.

Each day, our soccer players have to do a self-assessment and send it to me. So every morning, they have to check off if they have any symptoms or if they have been in close proximity with someone who has tested positive with Covid and then they email me that daily checklist. We do this everyday and that also goes to our medical staff. If there are any red flags, the soccer player is pulled aside by the medical staff.”

– Head Coach of the Woman’s Soccer Team of Roanoke College Philip Benne

As the Maroons engage in soccer practice at this time, Soccer Player Hannah Shay said, she and her teammates have had to constantly monitor their heart rates by checking their Fitbit’s or Apple Watches to ensure their heart rates stay at a steady pace. Furthermore, Coach Beene expanded on this and said, for those who have tested positive for the Coronavirus and have returned to soccer practices after recovering from Covid-19, they have to see a Cardiologist on a regular basis to make sure that their heart rate stays within a healthy zone to ensure they are healthy enough to practice and play soccer.

“Those who test positive meet with our doctor and our team physician. They have to get their heart checked out to make sure Covid did not have any effect on their heart. Once they pass that, then they can rejoin the team.”

– Head Coach of the Woman’s Soccer Team of Roanoke College Philip Benne

As hygiene is extremely essential during the Coronavirus pandemic, Coach Benne said, ‘every player has to bring their own water bottle and if the players need more water, the coaching staff will bring out water stations that are consistently cleaned to ensure their safety’. Coach Benne also said, he  understands how important it is to keep the field and the equipment clean in order to ensure that he, his coaching staff, and his soccer players are kept safe.

“We clean the balls after every practice. Also, the players are not using their hands at all, except the Goalies, and they have gloves on.

We have designed our practices to minimise contact, so that they do not throw the ball in. We have not done that all year.”

– Head Coach of the Woman’s Soccer Team of Roanoke College Philip Benne

In spite of how difficult this year has been for Coach Benne, his coaching staff, and his players,  he said that he is quite pleased with how well his players have abided by the safety measures that he and his coaching staff have put in place in order to keep his players safe at this time. Coach Benne offers a message of hope to those who are engaging in sporting activities at this time:

“It’s going to get better everyday.

Our goal is to hopefully have games in the Spring. I know a lot of the clubs have started to play games, so we are getting back there, but it’s going to take some time.

Everyone hang in there and let’s just hope it gets better everyday.”
